Repairing Minor Laminate Flooring Defects

Brought to you by: Clickfloor Laminate Flooring

Scratches

Scratches in laminate floors can often be filled in with a little bit of wood putty that is similar in color to the floor. Use a putty knife to fill in the cracks, and then clean the area with a dry cloth to remove any residue. You should put some type of seal over the wood putty to protect the repair; clear nail polish can be an excellent solution if the scratch on your laminate floors is small.

Another option is to check with the manufacturer to find out if they sell scratch repair pencils. This pencil is made of a waxy substance that is color matched to your specific floor. You “color” over the area in your laminate flooring that has the scratch and small bits of the pencil fill in the scratch. Consider purchasing one of these pencils if available when purchasing your laminate floors to take care of any scratches as they appear.

Splinters

If a splinter has dislodged from your laminate flooring, save it to repair your floors. Begin by cleaning the hole left from the splinter as well as the splinter itself with a 1 to 4 white vinegar and water solution. Use an old toothbrush to apply the solution, working it into the cracks and continuing to clean the area until all grime around the splinter is removed. Allow both the splinter and the laminate floors to dry.

With both pieces dry and clean, apply a small amount of wood glue to the hole in your laminate flooring left by the splinter. A cotton swab or small paintbrush is an excellent tool for the job. Then carefully push the splinter into place. Remove any glue that has seeped out with a damp cloth.

To make sure that the splinter dries in place, put a sheet of wax paper over the completed repair. Then stack several books over the wax paper and leave them there for at least eight hours.

Holes

Holes in laminate flooring created by dropping objects or even splintering that was not quickly repaired is an easy fix. Begin by contacting your manufacturer to find out if they sell a laminate flooring filler that is color matched for your floors. Most manufacturers sell a small tube that will fill in and conceal any small dents in the floor, based on the flooring that you have installed. If the manufacturer does not sell a color matched filler, go to a home improvement store and buy the filler that best matches your floor.

When you have gotten the filler, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to use it on your laminate flooring. Most require that you use a small putty knife and force as much filler into the hole in your laminate floors as possible. Then you should allow it to dry and lightly sand just the area containing the patch. Wood putty can also be used instead of a filler, but should be sealed after and carefully matched to the floors.

Most laminate flooring damage can easily be fixed by using one of these methods. The only exception is if the damage is extensive, and over large areas of flooring. In these cases, it is best to replace the affected area with new laminate flooring. For this job, consider calling a professional or at least the manufacturer of your laminate floors for suggestions.

Need a New Floor? Put a Cork in it!

Article by Melissa O’Connell

Your laminate flooring is looking scratched and dull. You’d love to get it refinished, but laminate can’t stand up to being sanded or treated. If there are spot scratches, you can replace the boards that are affected, or use a special laminate paste for small marks. If you want to freshen up the whole room, you should consider installing a new floor. Instead of expensive wood, plain plastic laminate, or linoleum, consider installing the latest evolution in flooring: cork.

Cork flooring has been used for many years in hospitals in schools, and has long been a popular decorating option in Europe. Now the U.S. is beginning to appreciate the many benefits of cork, and manufacturers are responding by creating a greater variety of colors and designs than ever before.

Perhaps the greatest feature of cork flooring is that using it is better for the environment than many other flooring options. Cork can be harvested without having to kill the tree it grows on. There are regulations in place that govern how often cork trees can be stripped of their bark in order to make sure that the trees remain healthy. The bark is then used for many things including making wine stoppers.

Cork flooring is made out of recycled champagne corks, and during the manufacturing process, there is no waste. Cork is an all natural renewable resource, which makes it a very smart choice for our homes.

Another benefit of using cork is that is has a naturally occurring waxy substance inside that repels bugs, germs, and mold spores. This is a great feature for homeowners with allergies. It is also relatively rot-resistant, meaning that minor spills won’t damage it.

Cork makes an ideal flooring material. It absorbs sound, which makes it perfect for media rooms or recording studios.

These floors are also warm and comfortable, which is part of the reason that so many hospitals have it. Cork provides a cushion surface for medical personnel who spend long hours on their feet. Cork also is a natural insulator, meaning that heat loss is reduced in the winter months, and the area stays cool in the summer.

Cork is also a durable surface that stands up to the rigors of daily living. Heavy furniture will compress the area, but thanks to cork’s built in memory, once the furniture is moved, the floor surface returns to normal.

Cork flooring has come a long way since its humble beginnings. Colors and designs are able to mimic the most expensive tile or linoleum. No longer just a practical flooring option for recreation rooms, you can find a design that will match the most elegant of decor.

Bathroom Tiles

There was a trend till a few decades back where while planning the interiors of a house, one area that most people least thought of was the bathroom. Thankfully, this has been changing now, and more and more people, especially in the urban areas, are giving a lot of importance to designing bathrooms. Many real estate agents say that bathrooms have a lot more influence on a person much more than we realize. Rightfully so, as it is a place where you unwind and relax at the end of the day. After all, who can resist a warm bath with the aroma of incensed candles and soothing music?

To create this ambience it is important that you give priority to each and every aspect of the bathroom while designing it. And of all areas, floors are the most crucial. This is why you need to be really careful and pre-planned while choosing the bathroom tiles.

They come in different styles, colours, shapes and designs and it depends on you to decide how you want your bathrooms to look.

One of the main reasons most people select tiles of different materials for their bathrooms is that they have proven to be reliable, cost effective and durable. Moreover, they are flexible and can be arranged in any way you want, to add that personal touch to your bathrooms. Against the traditional and conventional beliefs, today, bathrooms also play an important role in adding style and individuality to homes.

Bathroom tiles come natural as well as man-made. Most common tiles found in bathrooms are ceramic or vinyl. If your wallet allows, you could also go for marble and granite tiles. Linoleum, hardwood and metal  are the other materials used in tiling the bathrooms. Each material creates its own ambience and character to the bathroom. However, when it comes to popularity, ceramic tiles take the first place.

By choosing tiles and placing them in different ways, you could be innovative and different in designing the bathroom floors and walls. For example, when you choose the colour of the tile, you could either go for a pink, peach or lavender with matching or contrasting borders and thus make the bathroom look cosy. Or, by choosing blue or black, you could make it exotic. Using metal tiles in copper, bronze or zinc add a modern touch to the bathroom.

Another factor that you need to remember while choosing a particular tile is that you need to get matching accessories as well to match the floor and the walls. Thus, you could get the cabinets, curtains and sheets matching with the colour of the tiles. In fact, you could further add beauty to the room by placing interior plants or pebbles.

Bathroom tiles have the power to influence you by changing your mood. They can relax you as well as energise. Remember, it is your choice of tiles that determines whether your bathroom is a place you can relax in or escape from as soon as possible.
